U18A - MATCH REPORTS.

Round 13 - Berwick 11 def. Werribee 3.

The boys ventured to Werribee today, and after a sluggish start from the effects of yesterdays Ladies Day, the early morning heat and the Blitz Night Club, we came away with a resounding 11-3 win.

Crackers started on the mound and took a while to find the strike zone, but after the first innings where Werribee scored 2 runs, he found the zone and Werribee could not score off him for the next 3 innings. Mark Surtees came on for the last 2 innings, only allowing the 1 run to cross the plate.

Unfortunately, Werribee only had the 8 players with 2 in the outfield, so we turned off the stealing in the second innings but that still didn't stop our boys accumulating 11 hits for the game. A best-on-ground performance from Dean McCort, who had a great game at 3rd base, led the way with 2 singles and a triple, hitting in 2 RBI's and scoring 3 runs. David Mulhall, who filled in at the last moment, had 2 hits so did Scotty and Jim-Bob, who did a sterling job behind the dish for his catching debut this season. Other hits went to Crackers and Jimmy Kennedy.

The positives that came out of today games was we hit-to-situation really well. RBI's win baseball games, not the amount of hits you get. Well Done.

Just like to thank Turtle for filling in for us this week at the last minute, really appreciate it.

Round 12 - Berwick 11 def. Cheltenham 2.

On a beautiful sunday morning we travelled to Cheltenham to take on the rustlers and came away with a solid 11-2 win.

Chilly continued his sparkling form from the nationals and dominated on the mound in his 70 pitch outing, striking out 9 hitters in four innings. Mark Surts then came on to relieve in the last innings and continued the trend striking out 2 of the Cheltenham batters.

In the hitting, Mark had a great day with the bat accumulating 3 hits for the game, 2 singles and a triple, scoring 2 runs. With bases loaded, Craig broke the game open by smashing the ball to the left-centre fence for a triple, knocking in all the runners in front of him. Other hits going to Chilly, James Jackson, mally and Scotty.

After today results, we are now in the top four and need to consolidate our position over the remaining 5 week to play in this years finals.

Well done to Matt Kennedy who took over the reigns as team coach today and now has a 1-0 win / loss record.

Round 11 - Berwick 4 drew with Doncaster 4.

We took on a very strong and undefeated Doncaster team today, and after out-playing the Dragons for most of the game, we let them came back at us and came away with a 4-4 all drew.

Matt Chilcott started the game on the hill and showed us why he is the State team, completely dominated Doncasters strong batting line-up, only allowing the 1 run, striking out 9 of their hitters in his 6 innings of pitching. James Jackson and Ryan Shane came on late in the game to finish the game.

In the hitting, we faced 2 of Doncasters State pitchers and got 5 hits hits for the game with singles going to James K, James J, Dean, Scott and Ryan Shane who also hit in 2 RBI's.

Even though we led most of the game and could only come away with a draw, there were plenty of positives from the game. We proved today that we can mix it with the best. Well done boys.

Round 10 - Berwick Vs Essendon - Wash-out.

Round 9 - Berwick 2 lost to Geelong 12.

With an early start and a long drive to Geelong, we faced Geelong and were out hit on the day, losing 12-2.

Scott Simpson and Ryan Shane had the pitching duties for the game, but unfortunately could stop Geelong accumulating a winning score.

Mental errors cost us early in the game, but we still still hit the geelong pitching with 2hits going to Scotty and singles to Craig, James J and a nice double to Mally in his first game back from injury.

Next week is going to be a huge challenge for our team as we take on the always competative, Essendon.

We need to increase our concentration and intensity and hopefully put in a good performance.

Round 8 - Berwick Vs Newport - Wash-out.

Round 7 - Berwick 1 lost to Waverley 13.

The boys played an always competative Waverley today and with a fast start to the scoring in the first innings, we couldnt hold of their hitters going down 13-1.

Matt Chilcott started the game had to be replaced in the second innings by Mark Surtees who threw the rest of the game.

Our only run was scored by Craig, who hit a long ball to the left field fence and then was hit in by Jim-Bob in the first innings. A nice double was hit by Scotty and Deano got the only other hit for the game.

Round 6 - Berwick 15 def. Werribee 5.

After the Round 5 redraw, saw our first game in Major League up against the less experienced Werribee and after a slow start, making a few errors in the first innings, consolidated and come away with a resounding 15-5 win.

Our batting was the difference between the 2 teams, ammassing 17 hits for the game. A best-on-ground performance from Jim-Bob Jackson took advantage of every At-Bat with 4 safe hits hitting in 2 RBI's, while Scotty, Mark and Deano had 3 hits each. Ryan and Craig backed up the others by getting 2 hits each.

In the pitching, Ryan Shane continued his good form on the mound, starting the game, pitching the first 2 innings and was relieved by Chilly, who showed why he is in the State squad only giving up the 1 hit in his 3 innings of pitching.

Round 5 - Berwick 1 lost to Cheltenham 4.

Playing Cheltenham is always a difficult assignent and today was no different. In a tightly contested game, we were not good enough on the day, losing 4-1.

Ryan Shane did well on the mound in his 3 1/2 inning outing, striking out 5 Chelt batters and only allowing 2 runs. Mark Surtees and Dean McCort had the relieving duties for the game.

Our boys faced Victorian pitcher, Ben Leslie, who kept our bats quiet for the game with singles going to Deano and Mark.

Next week is when the real stuff starts, time to knuckle down and rip into it.

Round 4 - Berwick vs. Doncaster B.

We travelled to Doncaster today not knowing if we were going to get a game in as most of the round was cancelled due to rain. But, to our surprise, we got a full game in, endured some drizzle and came away with a solid 9-1 win.

After a slow start, our batting was the difference between the two teams with Ryan Shane, with a B.O.G. performance getting 3 hits, 2 RBI's and scoring 1 run. Jim-Bob continued his form with 2 hits and 3 RBI's and singles going to Craig, Mally, Woody and a huge shot to Mark Surtees going to the right field fence, collecting a poor duck when the ball landed, who came out of it with a bit of a limp.

In the pitching, Ryan Shane did a sensational job in difficult conditions over 5 innings, striking out 10 of the Doncaster bats. He only allowed a dubious single which was vigorously argued between the scorer and Ryan in the car on the way back to Berwick. If this hit had been scored in Ryan's favour, he would have thrown a "No Hitter". Bad luck Ryan, haha

This win today has basically put our team in Major League, well done to the whole team so far.

Round 3 - Bye.

Round 2 - Berwick 11 def. Sandringham 0.

In what could be considered the perfectly played game, the boys did everything right to get the win against one the of major league contenders in our pool, coming away with an impressive 11-0 win.

Once again, Chilly dominated on the mound throwing the whole 5 inning game. he struck out 7 hitters and did not give up a run.

Our hitters came alight today, led by Mark Surtees with 3 hits,2 RBI's and scoring 3 runs. Jim-Bob continued his hitting streak with another 2 hits this week and hitting in 2 RBI's. Other hits going to Woody, Mally, Deano and Craig.

Round 1 - Berwick 5 def. UFTG 1.

On a cold and wet morning, Round 1 of the juniors saw us travel to Upwey and in a rain affected game, we came away with a 5-1 win.

The game was marred by 2 rain delay's, which saw us only play 63 minutes with 15 minutes left in the game. To Upwey's credit, they mopped up the diamond and the game started again at 10:55. The game went overtime without any addition to the score.

Matt Chilcott started the game and in his 4 inning, 67 pitch outing, only conceded 2 hits and striking out 9 Upwey bats.

In the hitting, James Jackson had a good day out with 2 hits and knocking in 2 RBI's. Other hits going to Craig, James K, mally, Scotty, Mark and Woody.

Good start to the season.
