U16 STATE - MATCH REPORTS.

Round 9 - Berwick 10 def. Geelong 0.

Finally, after a washout Vs Cheltenham and a bye the following weekend we were able to get on a diamond for a “real” game of baseball.

This week we had a game against Geelong who are mainly bottom age players this season. It gave me the opportunity to give Jesse Gavin some quality time on the mound and also to introduce Mark Surtees to the pressure. Both of the guys rose to the occasion, showing some promise for games in the future. Between them they only gave up 1 hit and 2 BB in 5 innings and 0 runs.  Special mention to Craig Barnett for a rock solid game catching.

From an offensive point of view we had a quite even performance from all players. Special mention to Adam Silva for a towering stand up double down left field line and then a 3 run “in the park” homerun to centre field. Also a terrific performance by Hayden McLardy for 2 stand up doubles. Also a welcome return to hitting form by Jesse Gavin with a triple and a single base hit. Coupled with his pitching performance, an outstanding game for the team.

Overall another solid performance but still plenty of hitting improvement required if we are to challenge the other top dogs of our competition.

Final score Berwick 10 Geelong 0.

Encouragement award to Adam and Hayden.

Round 8 - Bye.

Round 7 - Wash-out.

Round 6 - Berwick 3 def. Doncaster 1.

After a disappointing loss to top team Essendon last week it would be interesting to see if the guys could bounce back against another potential finals contender.
Well we started off with a bang, Linden lead off with a hit to centre field, Adam was then hit pitched and mark cleaned up with a 2 strike, 2 RBI stand up double down the left field line. Craig then walked and Daniel forced the infield error for our 3rd run.
The game turned very defensive from then on with Linden pitching outstandingly for all but the last inning.
We saw some very good defensive work from Daniel, Craig, Adam and Mark, and a terrific deep fly ball at centre field by Hayden.
Also must mention a great catchers throw by Sam to nail his old team-mate, John King, stealing 2 nd . Adam finally came into pitch and held his nerve to save the game.
All in all a satisfactory result but still a lot of improvement and consistency to be strived for.

Final score Berwick 3 Doncaster 1.

Encouragement awards to Mark and Malachite.

Round 5 - Berwick 0 lost to Essendon 11.

The Under 16 state league team came back to earth with a big thud last weekend losing our first game for the season to Essendon 11–0. Nothing seemed to go right for us on the day but full credit to our opposition.

Special Mention goes to Sam Beasley for a great game of catching in very hot and trying circumstances, and also some very powerful hitting from Adam Silva. Encouragement awards to Sam Beasley and Hayden McLardy.

Round 4 - Berwick 10 def. Waverley 1.

The U16 state league team travelled to Waverley on Sunday and came away with a solid win, 10-1. Linden Goodman had a well overdue workout, pitching 4 of the 5 innings. The guys played a very good game, complimented by aggressive base running. Special mentions to Mark Surtees for some excellent 2 strike hitting, Lindens batting and base running and a tidy game catching by Sam Beasley. Looking forward to the games ahead.

Overall, a very well disciplined offensive and defensive effort. Encouragement awrds to Linden and Mark.
