Round 16 - Berwick 7 lost to Fitzroy 8. Well our season has come down to this, if we defeat Fitzroy today, we would play finals next week. The boys were fired up in anticipation for todays game and played superbly going into the last innings where we were leading 7-3. Fitzroy started to string a few hits together in the bottom of the last and showed us why they were undefeated throughout the season and unfortuneately we could stop there run going down by the single run, losing 8-7. Simon Ferris started the game, and continued his brilliant form from passed weeks into the last innings. Scot Carson then came on for the last half inning. In the batting, Scot Carson again, lead the way with 2 hits for the game and singles to Dick, J O'C, Darkie, Gibbo Snr and Quinny. The team put in a gallant performance today and nearly pulled it off, well done to you all. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters who came each week to cheer us on. To Margie, Debbie and Jenny for doing the scoring duties for the season and to all the people who umpired throughout the season, especially Craig Wood who did it on several occasions. To the 30 players who played in the thirds this season, it was an absolute pleasure once an, thanks to all. Regards Brett Barnett

Round 18 - Berwick 10 def. Waverley 8. We faced a team whom we are fighting with for a spot in the finals and put in a good performance coming away with a 10-8 win. Simon Ferris started the game on the hill and threw 6 1/3 innings of excellent controlled pitching. Scotty Carson then came on to close out the game. In the batting, it was a great team effort that saw every player either getting a hit or hitting in R.B.I's. The win today saw us draw level with St.Kilda, only seperated by percentage. Next week we take on ladder leaders Fitzroy and St.Kilda take on Preston, still with a slight glimmer of hope but relying on other results to go our way.

Round 17 - Berwick 14 def. Springvale 11. With still a glimmer of hope for finals action, the boys took on Springvale and did what we had to do to win 14-11. Scott Carson started the game on the hill against his old club and did well for half the game and then was ably backed up by Simo and Gibbo Snr, who finished the game. In the batting, there were good performances from Dick, Simo, Darkie and Gibbo Jnr with 2 hits each and singles Scotty and Gibbo Snr.

Round 15 - Berwick 16 def. Williamstown 2. In uncomfortable hot & windy conditions, we started the game with only senior players as the juniors couldn't play due to the Heat Policy. In saying that, the average age of the infield was about 40 years old, but we held our own and defeated Willy 16 - 2. Luckily the cool change came late in the game, much to the relief of the coach, Dick and Gibbo Snr who immediaely came off and were replaced by James, Mally & Woody. Simon Ferris pitched the whole game, keeping Willy to 2 runs and hit in 3 R.B.I's in a B.O.G performance. Scotty Carson led the way with 3 hits for the game, "Magnet Man" Ben Westhorpe, Darkie and Gibbo Snr with 2 hits each and singles to the coach, Gibbo Jnr, Dick, P.K. & Simo. Once again, it was an excellent team effort all round and with the finals just around the corner, we are on a roll and now only 1 game out of the final four with 3 games to go.

Round 14 - Berwick 21 def. Preston 7. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the boys took on Preston and with a tight contest early in the game, we came away with a resounding 21-7 win. Both teams had higher ranked players playing due to the Saturday games and Preston started off the game with a tall left-handed seconds pitchers which was a challenge for us. Preston took the lead with a long 3 run blast over the left field cones and too our credit, we slowly pegged them back to a 4-4 scoreline at the end of the third. In the fourth, our bats went crazy with 11 hits for the innings, scoring 17 runs. Preston only scored 3 more runs for the rest of the game. Brendan Robinson started the game for us and did well for 4 innings and Stuart Brunton finished the game in the last innings. In the hitting department, Puss and Scotty had 3 hits each, Stuart and Dick got 2 hits and singles to Jesse, P.K, Brendan and Daniel Reid. There were a couple special moments in the game I have to mention, Simon Ferris playing at third base, got a hard drive to his left and with a full length dive, gloved the ball got up and threw the ball towards first, unfortuneately the ball short hopped on P.K. at first who couldn't quite control the throw. It would have been the thirds "Play of the Season" if we got the out. And young Jesse Gavin, with runners on first and second, was told to bunt and put down a fantastic slug-bunt towards second, not only being safe at first himself, but scoring the man from second and the runner on first got to third base. It was an excellent team effort from all the boys against a quality pitcher not usually seen in the thirds. You should all be very proud of your efforts today and well done to you all.

Round 13 - Berwick 19 def. Footscray 9. The boys travelled over the Westgate and arrived at Footscray, normally hot with no wind to a very windy and cool day. Also, another big surprise was the massive improvements to the ground and surrounds, especially their stunning new clubrroms which will be open very soon, congrats to the FBC and their counsil. To the game, we batted first and after the end of the first innings, we had a 9 - 0 lead. the remainder of the game went run for run and in the end, we came away with a 19-9 win. John O'Connor led the way with 4 hits, 3 R.B.I's and scoring 3 runs. Scotty and Dick also had a good day out with 3 hits each, Jesse and Woody had 2 hits and singles to Ben, Ryan and Peter Kennedy, on his return game after fracturing his wrist. Young 14y.o's, Jesse Gavin and James Kennedy had the pitching duties for the day and in extreme conditions and a fairly tight strike zone, learnt a good lesson in not getting too fancy in poor conditions, going back to basics and throwing strikes.

Round 12 - Berwick 13 def. Melbourne 3. Thanks for the game report in Round 11 Craig, I'll teach you for calling me a "DUD", your on the bench for the rest of the season. To Round 12, the boys took on second on the ladder, Melbourne, who are a very strong batting team and with some excellent pitching and good defense, we came away with a resounding 13-3 win. James Jackson started the game on the mound, and did very well with 5 strike-outs and only 1 earned run. Scotty Carson then came on for the last 2 innings and held them off very well. In the batting, the hits were evenly distributed around with 9 players getting hits. Scotty, Ben Westhorpe and the coach hit in 2 R.B.I's each and John O'Connor scoring 3 runs. A big good luck to James Jackson who is off to Switzerland in the new year for twelve months on a trip of a life time with Rotary. On behalf of the whole team, have a great time James and see you when you get back

Round 11 - Berwick 4 lost to St.Kilda 5. It was a great game of Baseball to watch for all. A great job by our boys but unlucky in the final result with a walk-off hit by St.Kilda. Young Jesse Gavin started and really threw a great game for the Cougars throwing 4 excellent innings. Next on the mound was the "old" fella Brett Barnett, He threw 2 innings. The walk-off hit was from him... DUD!!! Otherwise hitting was good by all, everyone making good contact. Hit's from Richard Gyton with 2, Hayden McLardy, Jesse Gavin, Steve Johnson and James Kennedy all with 1. R.B.I's from James Kennedy, Richard Gyton, Craig Barnett and Stevey J all with one. A Special mention to our 3rd Baseman Daniel Wood taking an "over the fence" catch to record a "marvellous" out. Also a weak little ground ball to Brett that he thinks was "Drilled" at him gives him a so called "Seamed Bruise" on his chest. I think he just needs to suck it up.

Round 10 - Berwick 3 lost to Werribee 12. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the boys took on second place Werribee and held our own for most of the game, until Werribee scored runs late in the game, losing 12-3. Andrew Gibbens took the mound and had his best outing for the season, striking out 3 of the Werribee bats and only 5 earned runs against his name. Steve Johnson then came on to finish the game. A welcome return to life member, John O'Connor for his first game of the season and came away with 3 hits. Other hits went to Andrew Gibbens with 2 and a single to Richard Gyton, who coached the team for the day. Thanks Rich.

Round 7 - Berwick 6 def. Moorabin 3. The team took on Moorabin and after a slow start at 3-0 down, we gradually fought our way back, winning 6-3. Matt Chilcott started the game, and did fairly well for 4 innings. James Jackson came on and pitched for 1-1/2 innings and Scott Carson closed out the game. In the batting, Daniel Wood had a good day out with 2 hits, especially with a lead off triple at 3 - 3, getting around to third base with none down. Matt Little also had 2 hits with the important R.B.I that scored Woody on third that gave us an unbeatable lead. Other hits went to Paul, James K, James J and Scott Carson. The team won its fourth consecutive game, keep up the good work boys. A big "Get well soon" to Linden Goodman who came off the ground half way through the game feeling unwell. Hopefully, we'll see you back on the diamond real soon.

Round 6 - Berwick 13 def. Ormond/Glenhuntley 7. On our first really hot day for the season, the boys took on O/G and came away with our third consecutive win, winning 13-7. Matt Chilcott started the game and threw extremely well with controlled pitching for 3 innings. Speaking to opposition players at first base were amazed at the control Chilly showed and gave me the opportunity to brag that he was only 14, whoops 15 in a couple of weeks, sorry Chill. The coach came on and didn't throw very well, but got the job down in the end. In the batting, we got 16 hits for the game with all players contributing to the scoring. Scott Carson had a day out with 4 from 4 and hitting in 3 R.B.I's with Dick also hitting in 4 R.B.I's. Paul Chinnock put one half way up the tree in right field for a solo home run and 2 hits for the game. It wasn't all the seniors doing the hitting, young Ryan Shane got 3 hits, 2 R.B.I's and Daniel Wood with 2 hits. Other hits went to "H", Johnno and the coach. Special mention to Daniel "Golden Glove" Wood who fielded extremely well in the hot spot at third base, who nearly got the coach cleaned up a couple of times at first base, but was rock solid in defense.

|||||||
Round 5 - Berwick 7 def. Waverley 3. After a good win in Round 4, we wanted to continue our winning form and came away with a comfortable 7-3 win. Scott Carson took to the mound and held the Waverley bats to 4 hits. The coach came on in the last innings to finish the game. In the hitting, Dick lead the way with 2 hits & 3 R.BI's with Hayden Mclardy and the coach also getting 2 hits each. Other hits went to Paul, Scott & Ryan Shane.

|||||||
Round 4 - Berwick 21 def. Williamstown 7. The boys travelled to Williamstown to make amends for a poor showing the previous week and in gusty conditions, came away with a resounding 21-7 win. Young Gibbo started the hitting with a long, one bounce double over left field fence, and finishing up with 2 hits for the game and scoring 3 runs. Everybody contributed to the score line with Paul C, Peter K, Dick, Matt L and the coach with 2 hits each and singles to Hayden Mc, Woody and a long "Oxygen Required" triple to centre-right from Scotty Carson. In the pitching, the coach took to the mound and was ably backed up by the whole team in a near perfect errorless defensive effort. A huge "Bad Luck" to Peter Kennedy after being hit on the wrist in his second at bat, playing the remainder of the game and only finding out later that his wrist is fractured and in plaster for 6 weeks. Gutsy effort Peter.

Round 3 - Berwick 5 lost to Fitzroy 23. We played an experienced Division 2 team today and was given a baseballing lesson in all facets of the game losing 23-5. We had 7 hits for the game with singles going to Hayden, Paul, Dick, Gibbo, James & Daniel. Andrew Hemmes hit a long triple to the centre-right fence which was the highlight of the game. Each player needs to come to the game more switched on and work harder at training on the basics of the game.

|||||||
Round 2 - Berwick 2 lost to Springvale 9. We took on Springvale this past weekend and were not able to come away with game, losing 9-2. Gibbo started the game and just didn't have the stuff on the day and was relieved by Jesse, who did a great job slowing down the Springvale bats for the next 4 innings. Unfortuneately, due to pitch count, Jesse had to be replaced by Craig who finished the game. Veteran Springvale pitcher, Graham Hough, kept our bats quiet for 5 innings, with only 3 safe hits to Craig, Chilly and Steve johnson. Tim Evans did some excellent work at 3rd base making several defensive plays.

|||||||
Round 1 - Berwick 5 lost to Preston 6. The boys travelled to Preston, but unfortuneately with scores level in the bottom of the last innings a "Chinker" to left field scored the run that won them the game 6 - 5. Andrew Gibbens, in his first pitching outing for the summer, did fairly well with Preston scoring 3 runs in the first innings, mainly by stealing off his move. After we taught him to slide step pitch during our batting innings, came out and slowed Prestons momentum only scoring one more run in his 3 innings of pitching. Chilly then came on to finish the game. In the batting, Dick had a good day out with 2 safe hits, scoring 3 R.B.I's. Other hits went to Gibbo with 2, singles to Craig B, James K and a nice double to left field from Jesse. Defensively, the boys did really well, especially from Craig B, playing SS picking up a ball on his back hand side and throwing out a runner at home plate. Steve did a great job behind the plate with some excellent blocking the ball and calling the game. In a team with 8 U16 and a few mature players, there were good signs of an exciting year of baseball. |
